Artanis

Dragon-Con 2015

This was an epic project that is still not quite finished. Artanis is a character from the real-time strategy game, Starcraft.

This project was our first attempt at creating a mold and casting latex. The intention was to create a mask and gloves. Where we succeeded in the mask, we failed at the gloves. We knew that latex shrinks as it dries but we underestimated just how much. And even though the gloves looked great, after two days of drying they would no longer fit Craig's hands.

This was also our first time using the incredible material known as Worbla. All of the armor is coating in this thermo-plastic which created a very durable and rigid final product.

As we mentioned before this is project isn't quite finished. That blue acryllic blade protruding from the gauntlet is only one, of the pair. They were meant to function much like the game portrays. The mechanism you see in image #34 is a double-tier, double-action blade based on a design by Craig. Sadly the acryllic housing kept breaking due to the forces of the spring action. We hope to fine tune this design with a 3D printer.

Artanis and Starcraft were created by Blizzard Entertainment.
